Accounting, as the fundamental language of business, plays a crucial role in the meticulous preparation of financial statements. These financial statements hold significant importance for stakeholders such as owners, lenders (like banks), other creditors, and managers. The accuracy, timeliness, and comprehensibility of financial statements are vital indicators of a business's past performance and its potential for future success, influencing key decision-making processes related to business planning.

This article aims to explore the concept of a compilation engagement, one of the three services that a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) can undertake to provide comfort to users of a business's financial statements. The other two services are review and audit engagements.

So, what is a compilation?

A compilation engagement, the most cost-effective among the three services, does not provide assurance on the financial statements, and therefore, no opinion is expressed. During a compilation, a CPA assembles financial information from the company's management and presents it in the form of financial statements. Often sought by business owners in need of initial financing, compilations do not require the CPA to be independent, although any lack of independence must be explicitly stated in the report. In a compilation, the company gains confidence that the financial statements appear appropriate in form, with no evident need for substantial modifications.

In a compilation, the CPA is not obligated to verify the accuracy of the information presented in the compilation report and assumes no responsibility for its accuracy. While it is the least expensive option, a compilation also lacks assurance since no opinion is expressed on the financial statements or associated documents.

Why would my business opt for a compilation?

A compilation offers the advantage of engaging a licensed CPA to organize the financial records of your business and standardize the financial information into the required format under US Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) for financial statements.
